Introduction to Resistance

This module provides an introduction to Bt biotechnology and its importance in addressing control issues related to corn rootworm management. It also addresses the problem of corn rootworm resistance to the Bt technology currently in use as well as provide solutions to more effectively use and maintain the usefulness of those traits.

Objectives
  • Appreciate the significance of Bt toxins and their usefulness in managing corn rootworm populations.
  • Understand what Bt toxins are and how they are used to control Corn Rootworm populations
  • Understand the significance of resistance to Bt toxins and the mechanisms that cause resistance to develop
  • Learn steps that can be taken to more effectively manage the development of resistance in Corn Rootworm populations.
Significance

Corn rootworms are one of the most important insect pests of corn. One estimate of the economic impact of rootworms puts it in excess of $2 billion in the United States alone. The use of Bt biotechnology has been a very effective tool in corn rootworm control. The continued effectiveness of Bt is of significant economic importance. Working with producers to ensure the continued effectiveness of Bt technology is an issue of great agronomic importance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify practices that lead to and contribute to the development of resistance to Bt traits in corn rootworm populations
  • Be able to identify steps that can be taken to more effectively manage resistance development in corn rootworm
