Assessing Damage and Treating for Corn Rootowrm

Scouting: Larvae
Overview
Proper scouting for corn rootworms and assessing the damage or potential for damage they represent is an integral part of properly implemented integrated pest management approach (abbreviated as IPM).  Inadequate scouting or scouting procedures make it difficult to make sound management decisions.  This module will discuss how to scout for corn rootworms and make informed management decisions based on that information.
Objectives
•    Understand different options for scouting for corn rootworm both as larvae and adult
•    Know how to assess the damage done already as well as the potential for damage it represents
•    Be able to effectively synthesize the information necessary to make sound management decisions for controlling corn rootworms as well as managing resistance in corn rootworms
Significance
An understanding of proper scouting and assessment procedures is essential when making management decisions based on an integrated management approach.  Collecting useful information and using that to make sound decisions based on long-term as well as short-term consequences allows producers to make more economically sound decisions – allowing producers to increase yields with lower inputs while managing long-term issues such as insecticide resistance.
Learning Outcomes
•    Know how to properly scout for corn rootworms and assess the damage they have caused
•    Based on the scouting and assessment done, know how to adopt and implement proper management practices.
